Choose a travel backpack around the trip you actually take: how much you pack, how far you walk with it, and the baggage allowance you have bought. A larger capacity or thicker fabric does not automatically make a better travel bag.

Check the ticket before choosing the bag
Look up the allowance for your airline, fare and route. Separate a cabin suitcase allowance from an under-seat personal item allowance; they are not the same. Include handles and bulging pockets when measuring the packed bag.
The Farpoint lists 55 × 35 × 23 cm. That is a useful starting measurement, not a promise of acceptance. Check weight restrictions too: an empty bag uses some of your allowance before you add a laptop or shoes.
Run a packing and walking test
Pack everything you intend to take, including chargers, toiletries and any second pair of shoes. Close the bag without pulling hard on the zip. If you need to compress it forcibly for every journey, remove items or compare a different capacity.
Walk with the load, climb stairs and practise putting it on and taking it off. Adjust the harness rather than judging the bag on its shop setting. Compare Farpoint and Fairview fits in person if possible; capacity alone does not tell you which harness fits your body.
A hipbelt helps only if it fits and you use it. For short transfers with a light load, lower empty weight and easier access may matter more than a larger harness.
Make computer access part of the decision
Test removing the computer with the bag full, and repeat with any protective case you use. A stated screen size is a guide, not a substitute for device dimensions. Keep essential documents and medication accessible without opening your entire clothing compartment.
For wet journeys, protect electronics with an appropriate inner enclosure. Water-resistant fabric and zips do not establish that a packed bag is waterproof.
Plan for repairs without depending on an immediate replacement
Check the regional policy, shipping arrangements and likely turnaround before a long trip. Repair support can help keep a bag in service, but it will not necessarily solve a broken zip while you are in transit.
For a used travel bag, operate every zip, inspect the lining and seams, and check that the harness adjusts and stays in place. Ask about existing damage before paying; do not assume that the manufacturer will repair it free.
Questions before you buy
Is 40 litres necessary for one-bag travel?
No. It depends on clothing, equipment, climate and how you handle laundry. Choose the smallest bag that comfortably fits your actual packing list and meets your flight allowance.
Can the Farpoint 40 count as a personal item?
Do not assume it can. Its listed dimensions must be checked against the specific airline’s under-seat allowance, which may be much smaller than its cabin-bag allowance.
Should I choose a travel backpack for commuting too?
Only if its size and layout work for your normal commute. A pack that is useful for a week away may be unnecessarily bulky for a laptop, lunch and a layer.
